Hello everybody,

My name is Freek Blokzijl; living in Amersfoort (the Netherlands) an I am a planespotter for more than 20years.

It's still a long time to wait, but I am already planning a few days of spotting at Fiumicino this summer.
I just went through your amazing website and have to admit that the Roma Spotters provide strangers with excellent spottinginformation!!!!
Very, vey well done.
It 's a perfect guide for spotting around FCO.

There are just a very few questions left and hopefully there is somebody who might help me. ;)

First of all; What's the best way of transportation around the airport?
Do I need a rental car, or is there good public transport?

And if you know a good and affordable place to stay for two nights; please ley me know.

My plan is to arrive on an Easyjet flight from Amsterdam, on a Friday morning and leave on Sunday morning; so 36hrs to stay with you guys. :D
I have no dates in mind yet, but it will be somewhere in midsummer!

Thanks for your help/support and keep up this great website!

Best Regards

Freek Blokzijl

Hi Freek,

welcome on our forum.

Fiumicino airport is in the countryside and it's surrounded mainly by farms, if you want to go around to take pictures you need a car.
The airport is well linked to the city but there are no public transport to go around it, just few buses on the seaside (east part).

There is a good place where you can sleep for two nights just next to the "api terrace" which is the main spotting point of FCO. Anyway, I will ask to the other people here on the forum if they have other suggestion, so we can give you a list of places, you will have more choiche and find something good for your needs.

Let us know when you have decided the dates for your trip, there is always someone of us around Fiumicino in the weekends and it will be great to spend some hours of spotting together.

Have a nice day Freek, and once again welcome on the RSC forum.

Ciao

Stefano

You'll definitely need a car. Public transportation is near zero around the airport and, expecially during summer, those places get very hot and the car will be your salvation

Like Struzzo said, there is a good accomodation next to the "Api Terrace" spotting point. It's called "Motel Welcome Airport" and it's a great deal because you get up, you exit your room door and you find yourself in front of the runway. Another choice is the "Mach 2" hotel, probably a better location but slightly more distant from the action.

Any other question don't worry to ask ;)

Thak you guys for your help, so far.

Both places look good to me; however the Motel Welcome Airport seems to be the best, because of the excellent location.
As this is also the main spotting location, it might be on walking distance from the terminal? (less than 4km).
If not, then I have to rent a car for sure ;)

I haven't made up my mind, when to come, but for me it looks better/cheaper to visit FCO not in a weekend, but on weekdays, end July.
For some reason Easyjet has better flighttimes until Juli; from August 01 they started new schedules/times/fares; looking not good for me.
21 and 22 Juli are the best dates for me, but I'll defenitely let you know what/when I will decide.

Regards

Freek

Well, I think the Motel Welcome Airport is 4-5 km from the Terminal, but it's not a good road to do if you don't have a car and expecially in July! :D

well guys,
Here we go. Tickets are bought already.
I am coming to FCO on Friday, september 09 and leaving 24hrs later; saturday 10th.
I ve found myself a good hotel, a little bit further away from the airport but I am planning to rent a car, so no problem with distances ;)

Let's pray for some good weather and maybe we'll meet that thay :D

Cheers,
Freek

It was wonderful.
Nice airport with good spotting facilities. Light was great all day.
However, I did miss a few nice birds, so I will come back next year for two days, so I can have more time spend on both runways. :D
